Does a VPN Slow Down Internet?

What's happening

You've heard VPNs slow down your internet. You're not sure how much, or whether it's worth caring about.

You tried one. Something was slower. You're not sure if that was the VPN or something else.

Someone told you a good VPN barely affects speed. Someone else said all VPNs are slow. You don't know who to believe.

What people assume

Most people assume the answer is yes or no — a VPN either slows things down or it doesn't. The real answer is: always a little, sometimes a lot, occasionally not at all. It depends on the route, the server, and what you're doing.

Most people assume the slowdown is from encryption. Encryption overhead is small on modern hardware. The bigger factor is the detour — your traffic travelling to a VPN server before reaching its destination adds distance, and distance adds latency.

Most people assume a premium VPN means no slowdown. Price doesn't directly predict performance. A well-positioned server on an average provider often outperforms a poorly-positioned server on an expensive one.

What's actually going on

A VPN always adds at least one hop to your traffic. The cost of that hop is what varies — from imperceptible to significant, depending on server location and network conditions.

Whether that cost matters depends on what you're doing. Browsing tolerates latency that gaming can't. Streaming tolerates throughput loss that video calls can't. The same VPN can be invisible for one use and disruptive for another.

No guarantees

A VPN cannot be faster than your base connection. It can approach it, but it adds steps — it doesn't remove them.

Overhead is not fixed. The same VPN can perform very differently depending on which server you connect to, what time of day it is, and how loaded that server is.

If a VPN feels fast in a speed test but slow in practice, the test and the actual use are measuring different things.
